Make your apartment into a place you look forward to coming home to after work or classes, a place you will be proud to show off to friends and family. Simple touches can really change the space and make your apartment feel more welcoming. It just takes some time and thought to make your empty apartment look warm and personal, so we've compiled a short list of tips designed to let your space become your home.

1. Photos-
Never underestimate the power of photos to add color and interest to a room. Whether you went on a great trip last year or have childhood photos waiting to be resurfaced, photos can really bring a room to life. Print them out and stick them in frames that match the décor of the room. Consider turning a blank wall of your apartment into a ‘photo wall’ the memories associated with all of the pictures will really make your place feel homey.

2. The Lighting-
Overhead lighting, while useful, can also be harsh. To soften up the lighting and create a more welcoming feel, add a few table lamps or a floor lamp with an interesting design. You can even mix and match bases and shades to add style and continuity throughout the apartment.

3. Make It Comfortable-
Place pillows and throws on your couch and chairs to make them not only more decorative, but more soft and inviting to relax on. Don’t forget that your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, and the place you’ll probably spend the most time, so cover it with soft blankets. If your apartment has hardwood flooring, consider getting a rug to keep your feet warm in the winter and to add another element of color and design.

4. Organize Your Space-
You don’t want to feel like you are constantly wading through clutter or clearing off surfaces just to function in your apartment. Clean out the mess in your space and either toss or donate things you no longer need.

5. Add Life To Your Home-
Bring a little life into your apartment by purchasing some potted plants. Plants not only add color to your apartment, but also make the air cleaner. And, if you live alone, getting a pet may be a good way to add companionship to your life. There is a large variety of fish (and other pets if your lease allows for them) to bring life and color to your home.

6.  Accessorize-
Other things that can add color or depth to a room include mirrors. Decorative mirrors take up bare wall space and can make a room feel bigger and brighter. Shelves and bookcases can be decorative pieces as well. Instead of just cramming all of your things into the bookcase for storage, think about displaying the items so they add character and style to the area.
