Having "perfect speech"....

What still boggles my mind today is to see some deaf people who are still hinging on the idea that speech theraphy is all about attaining "perfect speech."

No.

There is no such thing. It's laughable to even think that.

If you don't believe me then you certainly have not heard a hearing native southerner or hearing native northerner speak.

This is all about attaining intelligible speech and not about "perfect speech." It's important that people need to understand this. This is about attaining good diction habits. Good enuciation of words to be spoken well. It is about obtaining an oral skill that will last a lifetime.

There are many benefits in having intelligible speech whether it's done as a one way conversation or to have a dialogue with people around you.

To say that speech theraphy is about trying to get deaf or hard of hearing people to get their speech as "close to hearing people's speech" is nothing more but a play on emotion rather than about facts.

Speech sessions have its benefits for deaf and hh kids. I should know because I was one of them and the beneficiary of having taken those sessions.
